Evelyn Viola Ashe Poteet passed away peacefully in her home the morning of January 29, 2024 at the age of 83. She was born in a small log cabin in the Pleasant Grove community of Etowah in 1941. She grew up in the Etowah community and attended Etowah High School before marrying Bennie Poteet in 1959. They had two beautiful children as a young couple just starting their lives together. After moving several times looking for better opportunities during the 1960’s, in 1973 the family moved back to Etowah and found a peaceful little house on 3 acres in the Cog Hill community with a beautiful view of Starr Mountain that they would make their home. There she had 3 more children and over the next 50 years lived the admirable and selfless life of a mother and wife. She worked in many jobs in the community during that time and even owned her own flower shop, White Dove Creations, for many years. By far, the most important job to her was that of mother. She worked hard and sacrificed so that her children had the chance for a better life.
In the community, Evelyn never met a stranger. She could always be seen leaving a store smiling and waving at the customers and cashier who she had just chatted with while they rang up her sale.
She enjoyed horticulture- taking care of her hydrangeas, iris, amaryllis, and her prized butterfly bush. She also loved to paint and spent many days in her later years at the easel painting sceneries she envisioned in her beautiful mind. Most of all she enjoyed sitting on her front porch swing in the warm evenings, chatting with her family and friends as the katydids buzzed in the distance.
Evelyn had many friends, but Jesus was her closest companion. She loved studying the Word and spoke with Him before every meal and many times throughout the day. She must be overjoyed to be talking with Him in person today.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her father, Jacob Melton Ashe; mother, Arvie Jane Ashe; brothers, Curtis Ashe, Woodrow Ashe and Ogle Ashe; and sisters, Ruth Ashe and Ilene Ashe; husband, Bennie Joe Poteet; and two of her children, Bennie Joe “Benjie” Poteet and Charity Chaldane Poteet.
She leaves behind three children, Felechia Hall of Woodstock, GA; Matthew and Christine Poteet of Knoxville, and Victor and Julie Poteet of Athens; 6 grandchildren, Jacob and Blake Hall, Cheyenne Poteet, Bree, Annabelle, and Vivienne Poteet.
Services will be held Thursday, February 8, 2024. Visitation will be from 4- 7 pm at Poole Funeral Home in Etowah, followed by a memorial service. All friends of the family are welcome to attend.
Although we miss her terribly in our mortal world, she has a new body with new lungs, and is breathing the fresh air of Heaven.
