Jane Shirley Hall

October 4, 1926 — March 6, 2023

Oak Ridge, TN - Jane Roberts Hall (Mame’), 96, of Oak Ridge TN passed away peacefully on March 6, 2023. Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley M. Hall. Jane is also reunited with her beloved sister, Mary Schuler. Born in Edwardsville, PA, on October 4, 1926, to the late Robert Roberts and Mary Baretsky Roberts, Jane was the middle sibling of a trio of sisters who remained lifelong friends.

Always the leader, she shined at Edwardsville High as captain of the cheerleading squad. Her vibrant personality followed her into nursing where she earned the nickname “The Little General”. Jane was most proud of her nursing career. She knew from a young age that nursing was her passion, and she answered the call to become a cadet nurse with the onset of World War II. Her compassion, dedication and leadership turned her into an extremely effective caregiver. She provided relentless, steadfast care to her patients until she retired at the age of 74 from the Cleveland Clinic where she made many friends.

Jane and her husband Stanley moved frequently due to his sales career. They made lifelong friends wherever they lived, and their door was always open for impromptu get togethers. Jane and Stanley shared a mutual love of sports, and she was the team Mom for her son’s baseball and football teams.

After the untimely death of her husband, Stanley at 51, Jane created a new life for herself in Southern Florida near her son Chuck. She and her close friend, Linda Clayton enjoyed many adventures cruising the globe as well as frequent gambling get away trips to Biloxi. Jane showed a loyalty to her friends that knew no bounds. Her circle of friends was wide, but she was always available for whatever they needed. Jane was an avid golfer. It’s also a sport to be shared with good friends, and Jane was a popular fourth in the golf circles of South Florida. She loved her “11 at 3” friends at Delray Beach. Throughout her life she carded an astounding FOUR separate holes-in-one: the last at the age of 90!

Jane was unfiltered, sharp-witted, and simply wonderful! In heels she stood a hair above 5-feet tall, but her vibrant presence was felt by all those fortunate enough to meet her. She had no shortage of opinions, and no reservations about sharing them with people she just met. She could dress you down, but in the same breath have you bursting from the seams with laughter. Our Mame’ loved parties, casinos and anywhere else a good time was to be had. She loved to tell stories around the card table, usually flanked by her two sisters and plenty of nieces and nephews. Jane Hall never folded, not in cards, and certainly not in life.

In times of trouble, the family and her friends would rally around Jane, who exuded comfort and strength. She was unflappable and stoic, the true rock of the family. Fortunately, Jane lives on through her large close-knit family, who attempt to honor her legacy by laughing, not taking life too seriously, and never folding.

She is survived by her sister, Roberta Hughes of Harvey’s Lake, PA and three children, daughter Ruthie Gordon (Stephen) of Oak Ridge, TN, son Charles Hall of Pompano Beach, FL, and son William Hall (Cheryl) of Beaufort, South Carolina and four grandchildren, Sarah White (Tripp), Andrew Gordon (Kailen), Charlie Hall, Rob Hall, and four great grandchildren, Madeline and Beckett White and Jack and Theo Gordon. She also leaves a host of cherished nieces and nephews.

Our family would like to express our deep gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Groves at Oak Ridge, her final home, for providing excellent care for our mother. We would also like to give our great appreciation to UT Hospice for their support and care of our family at a much-needed time.

Donations in her memory may be sent to Shriners Hospital For Children, 57 Ridgeway Drive, Dallas, PA 18612.
