With broken hearts and beautiful memories, we choose to celebrate the life and legacy of Linda Jo Ann Carney, of Etowah, born February 7, 1943.
Linda, or Mamaw, as she was known to many, was welcomed into her heavenly home on Sunday, February 18, 2024 surrounded by family. She was of Christian faith and a member of Covenant Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Winston Carney; son, Billy “Billy Boy” Crumley, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Patricia “Patty” Duggan; grandson, Justin Crumley; parents, Lorene Parsons and Joseph Deal; siblings, Mary “Tinker” Buckner, Claude “Buddy” Parsons, Jr., Wayne Parsons, Delores “Sissy” Stewart; all of whom she loved and missed dearly. Her departure leaves a deep wound, but there is joy in our hearts thinking of the reunion she received when she walked through the gates of heaven.
She is survived by her children, Anthony “Tony” (Dean) Duggan of Benton, Katherine (Mike) Johnson of Cleveland, and Donald “Tater” (Teresa) Crumley of Etowah; grandchildren, Cindy, Jennifer, Kristy, Dustin, Matt, and Tyler; many beloved great grandchildren; special niece, Karen “Bobbie” Brown; special friend, Cheryl.
Mamaw was an exemplary mother and human being. She truly had a servant’s heart and was a great example of what it is to be the hands and feet of Jesus. She embodied the best of qualities including unconditional love, strength of spirit, ending generosity, and understanding above all measure. This was seen in her everyday acts of kindness and love not only in her later years, but through out her entire life. She loved to spend time with her family, yard sale, find a good deal, and could make coleslaw and banana pudding like no one else.
Everyone that knew her has a story to tell of her kindness and veracity when it came to taking care of those she loved and even though she didn’t know. Her children and grandchildren were never surprised to see a new face at the dinner table or take to quick detour to help someone out. More than once, she welcomed strangers into her home and allow them a safe place to heal and recover until they could get on their feet. We have no doubt that had Jesus Christ graced her path as that have a beggar, he would’ve not been turned away. Mamaw did not do these things for praise and would not have liked the recognition. We can’t begin to imagine the things she did for others that we will never know about. Proverbs 19:17 says “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward them for what they have done” and her reward will undoubtedly be magnificent.
In addition to being the greatest mother to her own biological children and grandchildren, she welcomed over 100 foster children into her home throughout her life. She was proud of every child that came through her door and worked hard to show them they were loved and more than the circumstances they had been dealt. The impact she made on not only those children, but their families and others, will proceed her death for many years to come.
Mamaw was a beautiful person inside and out. She loved to have a laugh and a good time. She will be forever missed.
