Robert G. Stevens, age 77 of Knoxville, TN passed away on Friday May, 1, 2020 at UT Medical Center. He was born in Watertown, NY to Harold J. and Gladys Stevens on May 19, 1942.
Robert attended High School at the Army-Navy Academy in Oceanside, CA. He went to California state College at Los Angeles.
His military career was with the US Army, 82nd division, serving in Mainz and Wiesbaden, Germany, during the height of the Cold War.
Robert’s career years were spent with the Automobile Club of Southern California, Los Angeles; a Transportation Manager of Carnation Co., in Los Angeles; and Transportation Manager at Todd Pacific Shipyards of Los Angeles.
One of the highlights of his career was while he was commuting to downtown Los Angeles, Robert saw a lack of public transportation and particularly a lack of parking for the many commuters who wanted to ride the bus to the downtown business district. He also saw 32,000 seldom-used parking spaces at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds. Working with the Southern California Rapid Transit District, Robert obtained free parking for commuters at the fairgrounds, increased express coach service that could take advantage of HOV lanes, and arranged for the construction of bus shelters in the fairgrounds parking area.
Although being born in upstate New York near the Canadian border, Robert lived most of his life in Southern California, eventually moving to Tennessee about 10 years ago. However, he frequently said the happiest time of his life were his final two years at Knoxville High Independent Senior Living.
Robert is survived by his sister, Sandra Stevens Millar and brother-in-law Andrew Millar, both of Connecticut
